Excess Charge in Polyampholytes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Polyampholytes (PAs) are polymers composed of (quenched) random sequences of positive and negatively charged monomeric groups. We show that the radius of gyration, Rg, of a PA strongly depends on its overall excess chargeQ, and is very weakly influenced by other aspects of the sequence. For Q < Qc ≈ q0 √ N , where N is the number of monomers of charge ±q0, the PA is compact, while for Q > Qc it is stretched. Some aspects of this behavior can be understood by analogy with the shape instability of a charged drop where the Rayleigh charge plays the role of Qc. Instabilities of charged polyampholytes.
We consider polymers formed from a (quenched) random sequence of charged monomers of opposite signs. Such polymers, known as polyampholytes (PAs), are compact when completely neutral and expanded when highly charged. We examine the transition between the two regimes by Monte Carlo simulations, and by analogies to charged drops. We find that the overall excess charge, Q, is the main determinant ...
متن کاملEffect of charge asymmetry on adsorption and phase separation of polyampholytes on silica and cellulose surfaces.
The relation between the properties of polyampholytes in aqueous solution and their adsorption behaviors on silica and cellulose surfaces was investigated. Four polyampholytes carrying different charge densities but with the same nominal ratio of positive to negative segments and two structurally similar polyelectrolytes (a polyacid and a polybase) were investigated by using quartz crystal micr...
متن کاملPhase behavior of polyampholytes from charged hard-sphere chain model.
A molecular thermodynamic theory is developed for polyampholytes from the coarse-grained charged hard-sphere chain model. The phase behavior of polyampholytes with variations in sequence and chain length is satisfactorily predicted by the theory, consistent with simulation results and experimental observations. At a fixed chain length, the phase envelope expands as the sequence of charge distri...
متن کاملMonte Carlo simulations of polyampholyte-polyelectrolyte complexes: effect of charge sequence and strength of electrostatic interactions.
We present the results of Monte Carlo simulations of complexation between polyampholyte and polyelectrolyte chains. Polymers are modeled as bead-spring chains of charged Lennard-Jones particles each consisting of 32 monomers. Formation of a polyampholyte-polyelectrolyte complex is driven by polarization-induced attractive interactions. The complex is usually formed at the end of the polyelectro...
متن کاملAdsorption of polyampholytes on charged surfaces.
We have studied the adsorption of neutral polyampholytes on model charged surfaces that have been characterized by contact angle and streaming current measurements. The loop size distributions of adsorbed polymer chains have been obtained using atomic-force microscopy (AFM) and compared to recent theoretical predictions. We find a qualitative agreement with theory; the higher the surface charge...
